No bonuses for Supreme Court judges this year

Supreme Court judges won't be paid bonuses this year, court head Jan Sikuta decided on Monday, explaining that he feels it wouldn't be appropriate, given the difficult situation in society. He also cited the fact that bonuses were used in the past to promote elitism and internal corruption, as they were given to chosen judges and withheld from insubordinate ones. Sikuta at the same time admitted that the fact that several Supreme Court judges were recently charged with serious crimes also played a role in his decision, adding that "it would be a mistake, however, to view it as punishment for the actions of those colleagues". "Morally firm judges are a majority in the judiciary, including on the Supreme Court, and it's because of this belief that I hope this move will be accepted by the judges," he said.
