President: Justice in Slovakia undergoing cleansing process

Justice in Slovakia is apparently undergoing a cleansing process and no one remains beyond the reach of the law anymore, President Zuzana Caputova stated in response to the detaining of former top police officials on Thursday, TASR learnt from President's spokesperson Martin Strizinec. "Bringing former top police functionaries in handcuffs to their interrogations today serves as a serious signal about the relevance of suspicions covered by the media for a long time," claimed Caputova. Until anyone is rightfully convicted, the presumption of innocence applies, the head of the opposition Smer-SD party Robert Fico stated on Thursday in reaction to the fact that the National Crime Agency (NAKA) on the same day detained and charged several former as well as current senior police officers, including former police chief Tibor Gaspar. According to Fico, Gaspar was a very good Police Corps president with good results. "I don't know what these people did in their spare time. If they failed, let them be punished," he said. In his view, NAKA's Thursday raids are the result of a political order, with the Government offering people theatrical spectacles that were planned in advance.
