Border checks in place after attacks in Vienna

Checks at the Slovak-Austrian border crossings are being introduced on Tuesday following last night's attack in downtown Vienna, where individual(s) opened fire on people enjoying an evening out. Police patrols will monitor bike paths along the border as well, and at strategic places in Bratislava. The Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS) is closely monitoring the situation and cooperating with their Austrian counterparts. Slovak officials, including the Foreign Affairs Minister and the Speaker of the Slovak Parliament, have sent condolences to their Austrian counterparts.

At least five people were killed in shootings in Vienna on Monday evening, in what Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer described as a terrorist attack. One attacker was shot dead by police on Monday evening. He was a sympathiser of the extremist militia group Islamic State, according to Nehammer.
