Ten rectors of universities in Slovakia claim that the process of dismissing the rector of the Slovak University of Technology (STU) in Bratislava, Miroslav Fikar, significantly damages the reputation of universities. They are protesting against the manner and circumstances in which the Academic Senate of STU proposed to dismiss Rector Fikar.
"We respect the will of the supreme self-governing body of STU, but at the same time we reject the exercise of autonomous powers of self-government, which can be abused by individuals or interest groups in accordance with their ambitions. "We call on the Slovak Rectors' Conference to actively participate in the social dialogue on the reform of the competencies of self-governing bodies of universities so that similar excesses do not occur,"
The Academic Senate of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava dismissed Fikar last week with the entire process being quite controversial. Workers of the university tried to prevent the media and even the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Juraj Šeliga from taking part in the motion.
