Former Prosecutor General Čižnár resigns

Former Prosecutor General Jaromír Čižnár resigned as an ordinary prosecutor of the Prosecutor General's Office on Wednesday, the Denník N daily reported. As of Thursday noon, Čižnár had not explained his motives for the decision. Even though his seven-year term as prosecutor-general expired this summer and the law stipulates that he should have retained the post until a new prosecutor-general was elected, Čižnár asked President Zuzana Čaputová to relieve him from the post of acting Prosecutor General soon after his term expired. As Parliament still has not elected a new Prosecutor General, the first deputy Viera Kováčiková is now exercising the powers related to the top prosecutor post.
