“European Stork Village” of 2014 to be found in Slovakia

Buzica, a village in the Košice region in eastern Slovakia has received the title of the European Stork Village of 2014. This award is given by the Germany based EuroNatur environmental initiative, which has set up a movement to help counterbalance the habitat loss for storks in Europe.

Each year since 1994 the foundation has honoured the contribution of a different village with the title European Stork Village. Candidates for the title are villages or parishes with resident stork colonies. The storks in Buzica have their nests right in the village centre; locals got used to this cohabitation, and according to the mayor of Buzica, Jozef Mohňanský, both people and storks respect each other.
