The new Slovak government has nothing to be ashamed of, as Wednesday's European Commission (EC) report on the rule of law, which also analyses the situation in Slovakia, is an assessment of the situation that prevailed during the previous government, Prime Minister Igor Matovic (OLaNO) stated on Thursday on his way to the European Council in Brussels.
When asked how he perceives the first report of the European Commission on the rule of law in all 27 EU countries, which in the case of Slovakia has several critical parts in the field of justice or the fight against corruption, Matovic pointed out that this is an evaluation report for 2019. "We rule today, but this is a result and a report card on Pellegrini's government. Of course, we're sorry that Slovakia is criticised for corruption and the like, but on the other hand I'm not ashamed of anything," said the prime minister, adding that if this topic is discussed during the leaders' talks at the summit in Brussels, he'll point out that the National Crime Agency in Slovakia intervenes almost every other day and also detains important personalities. "Today, it is Slovakia that serves as a model for fighting corruption and the mafia," said Matovic.
