Slovakia stands with neighbouring countries in migration issue

The European Commission (EC) has come up with a proposal to reform the migration system. No country will be obliged to relocate asylum seekers from another country. The European Union has been split about this since 2015. Slovak politicians across the spectrum continue to reject mandatory quotas for the redistribution of migrants within the EU Member States. With this stance, Slovakia has joined its neighboring countries such as Austria and the Czech Republic, that do not agree with the so-called "forced solidarity" as proposed by the European Commission. Euractiv analyst Zuzana Gabrižová says that the new proposal of the European Commission is only an improved concept of the previously introduced rules. According to her, the new concept still does not sufficiently address the responsibility for incoming migrants. The New Pact on Migration and Asylum was presented on Wednesday by European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen. The new asylum and migration policy should enter into force in 2023.
