Government to deal with amendments concerning gambling and weapons

The Government on Wednesday is set to deal with, among other things, a coalition-sponsored amendment that will allow towns and cities to ban gambling without the need to first obtain a signed petition from the inhabitants, as well as a report on the country's security in 2019.

According to the sponsors of the gambling-related amendment, the current prerequisite of obtaining a signed petition first is redundant, as the composition of local authority offices is determined via elections, and elected candidates are presumed to represent and carry out the will of the inhabitants. At the same time, the sponsors argue that the legal systems of other EU-member countries don't condition bans on gambling on presenting a petition from the people who live in the given town.

An amendment to the law on guns and ammunition, sponsored by Smer-SD, will be also on the agenda. Its aim is to reduce the number of illegally possessed weapons, while at the same time possibly helping to identify weapons that may have been used to commit crimes.
