Slovaks in Brussels remember Chovanec

On Sunday, some 40 Slovaks living in Belgium gathered on Schuman Square in Brussels to remember Slovak national Jozef Chovanec, who died in February 2018 after being detained at Brussels South Charleroi Airport. The event was also attended by the Slovak Embassy to Belgium's Charge d'affaires Andrej Michalec, who stated that he highly appreciates the approach of the Slovak community in Belgium and its expression of solidarity with the Chovanec family.

According to Andrej Šebesta, one of the organisers of the event, the case is a sensitive topic for Slovaks in Belgium, as they consider Brussels South Charleroi Airport to be their "home" airport. Sebesta noted that the commemorative event was also meant to be a protest against "an unprecedented misstep by the Belgian police", while also expressing support for the Chovanec family.
