Roma celebrate their International Day

This week traditional food from Roma cuisine will be on the menu of seven restaurants in Bratislava to celebrate the International Roma Day, which is April 8th. The event is organised by a Slovak non-governmental organisation which aims at fighting stereotypes and helping young and talented Roma children, with part of the money collected during the week being given to them as a stipend.

Sociologists estimate that Roma ethnics, also known as Gypsies, count for an estimated 10% of Slovakia’s population, although the last official census produced the 2% figure due to the fact that many felt safer to declare themselves as Slovak or Hungarian. Roma often complain of being discriminated against in the education system and the labour market.
