Slovakia is lagging behind neighbouring countries in its support and use of cycling, reported the Slovak Transport Ministry. "Cycling transport makes up around 5% of all transport in Slovakia, while it's 6% in the Czech Republic and 10% in Austria," stated the ministry. While Bratislava currently has around 100 kilometres of cycling routes, other regional capitals are worse-off. Nevertheless, Trnava has recently begun supporting cycling transport significantly, including by building a parking tower for bicycles next to the local rail & bus hub, and with the use of company bikes by staff of the city authority. Other cities and towns following suit include Banská Bystrica, Piešťany, Galanta (both Trnava region) and Martin (Žilina region), added the ministry, not including data on the proportional volume of cycling routes to the size of a city or town.
Slovakia currently has around 550 kilometres of 'transport cycling routes', which can be used for commuting, as well as 14,500 recreational bike routes.
