Throughout Monday, marked as 'White Roses Day', in the western Slovak town of Handlová on the August 29 street, people can remember the victims of mining tragedies by placing a white rose at the local Miners' Monument. On this day, Slovakia remembers the 11th anniversary of an explosion in the local mine, which took the lives of 20 miners and rescue workers.
The 'White Roses Day' or the Day of Victims of Mining Disasters of the Slovak Republic was approved by the Parliament in 2010. On this Memorial Day, Slovakia commemorates more than 470 victims of mining accidents that occurred in the mines in the Upper Nitra region. As well as more than 300 historically mapped mining tragedies that have taken place in metal mines in Slovakia.
