Gender pay gap in Slovakia has widened

In 2019, the average gross salary of women in Slovakia made up a mere 79.8% of what men earned, wrote the Statistics Office. The office added that despite efforts to achieve gender equality on the labour market and in society, the gender pay gap in the country has widened over the past couple of years. Last year, men would earn €1,399 per month on average, which is €283 more than women. "While the average women's salary was 11.6% below the national average, men's salary exceeded it by 10.9%," stated the office.

Statistics further showed 62.1% of men finding themselves in the salary band up to €1,300, 5.3% of men ranging in the band between €1,300 and €1,400 and 31.9% of men earning more than €1,400. Meanwhile, 64.2% of women earned less than the national average, 6.8% of women moved within the salary range from €1,100 to €1,200 and 29% of women earned over €1,200.

Factors that influence the slower growth of women's salaries compared to men's ones chiefly include education and the representation of men and women in individual low- or high-income economic activities and jobs. "The gender pay gap is also affected by prejudices regarding the suitability of men and women to perform certain kind of jobs, career advancement, participation in management positions, as well as maternity and parental duties," reads the Statistics Office's report.
