Employment down in all sectors but IT in June

The fall in employment seen in previous months did not come to a halt in June, with accommodation and restaurant services being hit the hardest, the Slovak Statistics Office reported. Employment only grew in information and communication services, going up by 5.2% year-on-year (y-o-y) in June. The most significant annual decreases were recorded in the following sectors in June: in accommodation (by 18.1%); in restaurants and pubs (13.4%); in construction (7.8%); in industry (6.3%); in wholesale and in retail (4.6%) each; in the sale and repair of motor vehicles (3.9%); in selected market services (3.6%); and in transport and warehousing (0.9%).

The average employment rates for the first six months of 2020 increased y-o-y in information and communications activities - by 5.1% and in transport and warehousing - 0.1%.

Conversely, employment went down in the following sectors: in accommodation - by 6.6%; in pubs and restaurants - 5.8%; in industry - by 4.8%; in retail - 3.8%; in construction - 3.6%; in wholesale - 2.6%; in the sale and repair of motor vehicles - 2%; and in selected market services - 1.3%.
