Parliament okays new rules for election of Prosecutor-General

Rules governing the election and ouster of both the Prosecutor-General and Special Prosecutor are due to change. According to the new legislation embraced by Parliament on Wednesday, even candidates from the legal profession who are not prosecutors will be eligible for the post of Prosecutor-General. Also to be extended is the number of individuals and institutions enabled to nominate candidates. Candidates vying to become the Prosecutor-General or Special Prosecutor must be Slovak citizens over the age of 40, with no criminal record and at least 15 years of experience in a legal profession. Additionally, candidates for the Special Prosecutor will need to have a judicial exam. Parliament can propose the oustering of the Prosecutor-General and Special Prosecutor if they stop carrying out their powers "properly, honourably, independently or impartially".
