It is the duty of both current and future generations, and especially politicians, to do their utmost to prevent more massacres in the Western Balkans, in Europe or elsewhere, such as the one that happened around Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Foreign Ministry said on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of this event, which is described as the worst post-war European genocide. Other war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the conflict that accompanied the break-up of the former Yugoslavia remain a memento in the modern history of the region and Europe, according to the ministry. Slovakia has long supported the ambition of the Western Balkans countries to join the European peace project. According to the Foreign Ministry, important preconditions for achieving this goal are reaching real reconciliation between nations, coming to terms with the past and focusing on a common future.
