Parliament, the president and the Cabinet will be able to nominate only non-judges to the Judicial Council, according to the reform constitutional draft bill in the field of justice, which Justice Minister Maria Kolikova (For the People) is sending to interdepartmental review. The purpose of the change in the nomination of members of the Judicial Council is to ensure a balance in decision-making for the whole judiciary and to contribute to an increase in public control of the judiciary. The Judicial Council will also have the power to act in matters relating to the property statements of judges and to look into their assets. The draft also proposes a so-called regional principle in the election of members of the Judicial Council.
Nominees for Judicial Council will be exclusively non-judges
