Slovakia remembered Cyril and Methodius

On Sunday, July 5, Slovaks celebrated the Saints Cyril and Methodius Day at numerous events around the country. "This holiday reminds us of important historical events, the heralds who brought us faith and teaching," said Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová. She added that they were not only scholars and educated men, but also courageous people who came to a new territory to spread wisdom, education and faith there. Speaker of Parliament stressed their importance by underlining that Cyril and Methodius are mentioned in the preamble of Slovak Constitution in words "We, the Slovak nation, bearing in mind the legacy of Cyril and Methodius…"

The two brothers, Cyril and Methodius, both priests, were summoned to the territory of Great Moravia, now a part of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, by the ruler Rastislav in 863. They created the Glagolitic alphabet and translated biblical texts into the Slavic language.
