The Day of Slovaks Living Abroad, which is marked each year on July 5, was commemorated in Bratislava on Sunday. The official event took place at the foundation stone for a future memorial to Slovak emigrants in Sad Janka Kráľa park. Ján Varšo, who chaired the Office for Slovaks Living Abroad (ÚSŽZ) until the end of June, said at the event that the Office issued 710 certificates of Slovaks living abroad over the first half of this year, chiefly to applicants from Serbia and Ukraine. Slovak countrymen have been officially marking the Day of Slovaks Living Abroad since 1993.
