Rising Slovak tennis star Jana Čepelová fought off No. 1 Serena Williams on Tuesday, defeating the American pro 6-4, 6-4 in an 84 minute battle on the courts during the second round of the Family Circle Cup.
“I tried, but I just couldn’t do any more,” said Williams following the match. Čepelová however was ecstatic with the result. “Stepping up against a world number one and succeeding is like a fantasy; I'm incredibly happy. It feels great”, said Čepelová. The 20-year-old Slovak will now face Elena Vesnina of Russia, who beat the Slovak, Anna Schmiedlová, 6-2, 6-1.
