Milan Lučanský resigns as Police Chief

Milan Lučanský has announced that he is resigning as Slovakia's Chief of Police, citing disagreements with Interior Minister Roman Mikulec over the future of the police and a lack of mutual trust. "I do not want to be responsible for the leadership of the Ministry of the Interior politicizing the police. It's a big step backwards. I have considered all the possibilities that the law offers me," said Lučanský, adding that he will leave the Police Corps entirely at the end of August, after 30 years of service. Interior Minister Roman Mikulec has accepted his resignation and thanked him for his work. Milan Lučanský became Police Chief in June 2018 following the resignation of his predecessor Tibor Gašpar after street protests triggered by the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancee.
