Prosecutor Vasiľ Špirko won’t run for PG post

Prosecutor of the Special Prosecutor's Office (USP) Vasiľ Špirko won't run in the upcoming election for the post of prosecutor-general, TASR press agency reported on Tuesday. "I want to continue in my professional work at USP, where I plan to participate with my colleagues in clearing up serious anti-social criminal cases," Špirko told TASR. He is known for his investigation into tax fraud, specifically unauthorised VAT refunds worth tens of millions of euro in eastern Slovakia, in connection with which he filed a criminal complaint against former interior minister Robert Kaliňák and former finance and transport minister Ján Počiatek. The prosecutor also supervised an investigation into ex-minister Kaliňák's purchase of a stake in a company called B.A. Haus from convicted tax fraudster Ladislav Bašternak.
