Slovakia will not face a suit at the European Court of Justice over the controversial tender to build and operate an electronic toll collection system which was won by the company SkyToll with the highest bid five years ago, the Slovak daily Sme has reported. SkyToll’s three rivals were excluded from the tender.
”The European Commission has closed the case because it had not been proven with sufficient certainty that the state excluded bidders without justification”, reads the EC’s statement. A complaint about the development of the tender was filed by the three excluded companies. The lowest bid in the tender was submitted by Italian company Autostrade, which offered to build the toll system for €631 million. SkyToll remained the only bidder. It demanded more than €850 million for the construction of the system. Slovakia started to collect tolls from trucks and buses on motorways, high-speed roads and selected sections of first-category roads in 2010.
