President Zuzana Čaputová doesn't consider the ongoing ban on retail sales on Sundays, when retail shops are obliged to remain closed in order to disinfect their premises, to be appropriate or justified, arguing that shop owners can carry out sanitary work any day in the week. Her statment came after MPs Ondrej Dostal, Radovan Kazda (both Freedom and Solidarity/SaS) and Ján Benčik (For the People) have asked chief hygienist Jan Mikas to cancel the ongoing ban on Sunday retail sales, claiming that the measure might be in breach of the Constitution and has been politically motivated. "We have our doubts about the fact that the real reason behind the ban is the protection of public health as shops are obliged to disinfect their premises and carry out other preventive measures regularly even during the week," said MP Dostal.
Epidemiologists have stated that given the coronavirus situation, they found it an acceptable solution to set Sunday aside for sanitary purposes. According to them, the whole sanitation and disinfection process requires a professional approach and enough time to be carried out, so it can't be done on working days.
