On Monday and Tuesday, Slovaks and Czechs commemorate the 30th anniversary since the first free election after the fall of the Communist Soviet led totalitarian regime. On June 8 and 9 1990, citizens of Czechoslovakia could vote for the first time in 44 years. According to the Czech democracy after 1989 publication, this ballot was presented as a referendum on the old regime and the results represented a definitive divorce between the vast majority and the undemocratic system. The turnout was 95.39%, which was a record number in both Slovakia and Czech Republic.
