Judge Martin Vernarsky has become the head of the third senate of the Constitutional Court as of Monday, replacing Mojmir Mamojka, who resigned as constitutional judge in May. Mamojka announced his resignation in response to reports about his contacts to businessman Marian K., charged with ordering the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak in early 2018. Mamojka and Marian K. allegedly met in 2018 before the authorities were to decide on remanding the latter on charges of major fraud. Marian K.'s aide Peter Toth, a former counter-intelligence director, earlier this year also testified before a court on contacts between the two. Mojmir Mamojka has rejected the notion that he was abetting Marian K. Mamojka conceded that he knows Marian K., but claimed that he had refused to provide advice that Marian K. had asked him for in their SMS text conversation, later leaked to the media, and also hadn't met personally with the controversial entrepreneur. Mamojka, 69, stated that he resigned due to Government plans to introduce retirement age caps for judges and also because of his ill health. The Constitutional Court has four senates.
