Slovakia and Georgia are ready to boost their defence co-operation, following an agreement on co-operation signed by Slovak Defence Minister Martin Glvač and his Georgian counterpart Irakli Alasania in Bratislava on Thursday.
“Slovakia has been a constant supporter of Georgia's integration initiatives into European as well as transatlantic groupings. The signing of such an agreement forms a basic framework, based on which we can engage in closer co-operation,” stated Glvač, who added that the agreement involves military training activities and education. Closer co-operation between the two countries should be further facilitated through Slovakia's new embassy in Tbilisi, which is set to be opened by Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák on 8th April. The embassy office will be located on the premises of the European Union Delegation in Georgia. In addition, the two officials discussed the situation in Ukraine. “You may remember that it was Georgia who was victim to Russian aggression in 2008. And if the international community had responded in a more intense way, we could have avoided the situation that has recently evolved in Crimea,” emphasised the minister.
