The official election campaign to the direct election of the president of the Slovak Republic ended this Thursday morning, as the pre-election information moratorium came into effect. Rallies with voters or their political promotion in broadcast media is not allowed, nor is the publicizing of results of public opinion surveys.
The moratorium remains in force also during Saturday’s second round of presidential elections until polling stations close at 10 p.m. The second round of the election is to take place on 29th March. Voters will choose between the incumbent Prime Minister and SMER leader Robert Fico and philanthropist and former entrepreneur Andrej Kiska. Ahead of the second round the incumbent President Ivan Gašparovič asked for air time on public broadcast media. Apart from the fact that he gave his clear vision of what the next Slovak president should be like and he called on Slovaks not to stay at home on Saturday and go and vote. To vote means to actively participate on state issues, not to vote means voluntarily giving up this right, stated the President.
