On the occasion of the 50th Earth Day, Slovakia officially joined the worldwide science and education program GLOBE, run by NASA. As of Wednesday, schools can make use of educational materials, perform various experiments, share their results and thus enable scientists at NASA to process the acquired data. They can also participate in international meetings involved with environmental issues. The Environment Ministry and the US Embassy in Slovakia have highlighted the chance to join the measurement program in order to collect data on trees, as these are indicators of a healthy eco-system as well as helping to control temperature and the level of CO2. The Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment Program provides not only students but also the general public with the opportunity to share data collection and participate in the scientific process in order to better understand developments in the global environment. It was internationally launched on 22nd April 1995.
