The current presidential election won’t be the last two-round election in which Slovaks living abroad won’t be able to exercise their franchise. The problem could be tackled by ushering in voting via the internet, but that alternative isn’t likely due to high costs and security risks, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák said on Sunday.
At the next parliamentary session, lawmakers are set to discuss new election legislation. Electronic voting isn't part of the bill, though. Since 2006, Slovaks living abroad can participate in parliamentary elections: via post. A petition advocating the introduction of internet voting was launched in January by a civil initiative of Slovak compatriots living abroad, with the organization intending to collect at least 50,000 signatures in 12 months and deliver them to Parliament. The petition also aims to expand the range of elections in which Slovaks living abroad can participate.
