MoD: Instalments for F-16 jets to be reassessed

Regular instalment payments for the F-16 fighter jets that Slovakia has ordered from the USA need to be re-evaluated, as the €150 million that needs be paid by the end of September will be a significant problem for the budget, Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď (OLaNO) has stated for TASR press agency.

Slovakia has already paid €900 million for the jets. While the second instalment for this year stands at €150 million, more than €500 million will have to be paid next year. The ministry's budget will be significantly influenced by the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Naď has explained that making the payments won't be easy, as they involve an extraordinarily complicated contract. He believes, however, that Slovakia and the USA will arrive at a reasonable agreement. Slovakia has purchased 14 American-made F-16 C/D Block 70 fighter jets. The first four jets should be supplied to Slovakia in 2022, with the rest following one year later. The procurement also includes weaponry, logistics support and the training of pilots and ground crew.
