Slovaks will observe Earth Hour by sharing photos of nature on social networks this year, Andrea Settey Hajduchová of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) Slovakia has stated. Usually, Earth Hour is celebrated by cities turning off the lights that illuminate their most important landmarks in order to draw people's attention to what they can do to save the Earth. "However, this year we're leaving 'the lights-out activity' up to towns and cities," explained Settey Hajduchová. People will share pictures of nature as part of an activity called 'Together in Nature'. They are supposed to post pictures of themselves in natural surroundings before the coronavirus pandemic. The initiative, however, encourages people to symbolically turn the lights off in their households from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on Saturday, 28 March.
Earth Hour was established in 2007 in Australia. Slovakia joined the initiative in 2011. The country usually turns off the lights that illuminate castles, churches and public institutions.
