The global economic crisis has taught people in Slovakia to save money when shopping, but they’ve also taken an interest in the quality and the origin of the products they buy, reports the Pravda daily on Tuesday.
It cites the head of the Coop Jednota supermarket chain Gabriel Csollar, who says that over the past five years people have gone from simply comparing prices among the sellers and buying the cheapest products to focusing much more on quality and the country of origin. The Kaufland retail chain, however, has noted that people have started checking the country of origin much more and are willing to give preference to Slovak goods, but only while taking price into consideration at the same time. Tesco has been running its 'Made in Slovakia' campaign with discounts on domestically produced goods. All retailers point to the fact that the local food industry does not produce enough to cover their demand, however. “Each year 45,000 tonnes of cheese is consumed, but only 30,000 tonnes are made in Slovakia”, said Csollar.
