School system a priority for all parties for upcoming term

The school system has been a priority for each government; however, it is in a critical state in Slovakia, wrote the tvnoviny.sk website, pointing to most parties who are declaring it to be their priority once again.

Slovak Education Minister Martina Lubyová said that the attractiveness of the teaching profession has increased over the past couple of years thanks to increases in salaries and the remuneration of teachers. However, this statement is not based on truth according to Slovak Teachers' Chamber (SKU) President Vladimír Crmoman.

"Rather the opposite is true, surveys by job portals show a rapid decline in demand for the teaching profession in recent years," stated Crmoman. He views the measures taken so far in order to improve the economic situation of teachers as insufficient and expects the unfavourable situation to deepen unless there is a significant change. "We are already feeling a lack of qualified teachers now, especially natural science and informatics teachers, teachers for the first stage of elementary education [first five grades of elementary schools] and nursery schools in the Bratislava region are also facing a problem with a lack of teachers," stressed Crmoman.
