Eurobarometer: Combating plastic waste top eco-priority for Slovaks

Half of Slovaks believe that eliminating plastic waste and single-use packaging should be the top priorities of the EU's environmental convention in combating climate change, according to a Eurobarometer survey carried out in the autumn of 2019. Next in terms of priorities should be a fair remuneration for farmers in the EU (41% of Slovaks), so that they might be able to provide cheap and safe food.

Katarína Javornická from an agency called Kantar stated that public support for this issue in the rest of the EU was "slightly lower" - 37% on average. "A notable discrepancy was seen when it came to the use of energy from renewable sources, which was supported by 35% respondents in Slovakia but more than half the people in the EU," said Javornická. Meanwhile, one third of Slovaks and people in other EU-member countries on average concurred on reducing energy consumption and supporting a circular economy. This was followed by the protection of biodiversity and moves aimed at achieving zero pollution. "The idea of introducing a tax on products imported from third countries with lower climate standards had slightly higher support in Slovakia than in the rest of the EU," noted Javornická. The lowest level of support, at 23%, was given to measures to make the EU economy carbon-neutral by 2050.
