Poll: Far-right party second, democrats could form government

If the Slovak General Election had been held in January, the largest governing Smer-SD party would have prevailed with 18% of votes, representing a loss of 10 percentage points compared to the 2016 General Election, indicates a poll carried out by the Focus agency. Another coalition member, the Slovak National Party, would also record a loss, earning 5.2% and the third governing party Most-Híd with 4.4% would not even beat the 5% threshold to make it into Parliament. The strongest of the opposition parties would be the far right People's Party Our Slovakia (12.8%).

According to the poll, the remaining six opposition parties would be able to form a government. For People party would be third with 10.8%, followed by the coalition of Progressive Slovakia-Together (9.8%), Ordinary People (9%), We Are Family (7.6%), the Christian Democrats (5.7%) and Freedom and Solidarity (5.5%).

The poll was carried out in January 15-22 on a sample of 1,013 respondents. The general election in Slovakia is set to take place on February 29 this year.
