Climate diplomacy is a new but cardinal element of the EU's foreign affairs policy and it needs to be embraced also by the future Slovak government, stated Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák in Brussels on Monday. Lajčák was there to take part in a session of the Council of the European Union for Foreign Affairs. The head of Slovak diplomacy conceded that it's a "rather unorthodox issue" for the Council of the EU, adding that the agenda "has its logic," as climate changes are a contemporary reality and have an impact also on other issues falling under the purview of foreign policy, such as security. According to Lajčák, apart from working on local green policies, the EU must utilise the available diplomatic leverage at its disposal, as the union emits only 9% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.
