Poll: Opposition could form a government

Nine parties or coalitions would make it into the Parliament, including two of the three parties in the current coalition, which would thus not earn a majority, indicates a recent poll conducted by the AKO agency. The largest governing party Smer-SD would win with 17.1%, followed by the far-right People's Party Our Slovakia (11%) and the Progressive Slovakia-Together coalition (10.2%). In fourth place was For the People (10%), fifth Ordinary People (8.4%), and sixth We Are Family (7.9%). Freedom and Solidarity finished seventh with 6.7%. The last two parties to make it into Parliament would have been the junior governing Slovak National Party (5.9%) and the Christian Democrats (5.5%). The junior ruling party Most-Hid with 4.2% would not reach the 5% threshold.

Good Choice (3.4%), the Hungarian Community Solidarity (3.2%), and Homeland (2.3%) would have remained outside Parliament too. Other political parties would have garnered less than 1 percent.

Thus, without the far-right Party, six opposition parties would be able to form a government with 88 seats. Smer-SD would have won 31 seats in the House, followed by People's Party Our Slovakia (20); PS-Together (19); For the People (18); Ordinary People (15); We Are Family (14); Freedom and Solidarity (12); Slovak National Party (11) and Christian Democrats with 10 seats. 76 seats are necessary to form a government in the 150 seat Slovak Parliament. The general election in Slovakia is set to take place on Febrary 29, this year.

The poll was carried out on a sample of 1,000 respondents between January 15-17.
