70% of Slovaks own property not burdened by mortgage

In Slovakia, 90% of people live in their own property and 70% of them own a property not burdened by a mortgage, being high above the EU average in these criteria, indicate Eurostat's data. Poland, Latvia, and Hungary posted numbers similar to Slovakia. In Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria and Serbia, 90% of people live in their own property not burdened by mortgage. By contrast, only one third of people live in their own property in the UK.

70% of people in the union live in their own flats, out of which 27% are burdened by mortgage. On average 20% of the people in the EU live in a commercialy rented household and 10% in a subsidized rented household. 8.5% of Slovaks live in a commercially rented household and 1.5% in a subsidized household.

On the other hand as many as 40% of Slovaks live in the so-called overcrowded households, where couples and their children live with their parents or other relatives. The lowest number of overcrowded households (5%) are in Belgium and Cypress.
