SPP: Business as usual with gas delivered from Russia

Natural gas imported from Russia is being delivered as per normal, according to the spokesman from the Slovak gas utility company SPP, Peter Bednár. "We are ready to supply gas without any restrictions even if there is a partial or total cut off from the East. We can manage this mainly due to sufficient supplies of gas in underground storage facilities", he added.

The Reuters news agency reported on Wednesday that Slovakia is increasing gas imports from Germany with the aim to sustain adequate supplies if the gas supply is cut off from Russia. Slovakia, according to the agency greatly increased gas imports from Germany shortly after Ukraine declared that it failed to pay its debts to Russia for gas supplies. This raised concerns that the Russians might, once again, stop the gas supplies through Ukraine as it happened during the gas crisis in early 2009.
