A rare Bactrian camel greets visitors at the Košice Zoo

The Košice Zoo showed to the public for the first time a baby two-humped camel, which was born on February 25 to a mother called April.

"We're happy to have been able each year to have new offspring of this species, which is among the most popular in our zoo. The birth of a camel is always a big thing in a zoo, because the rearing is often complicated. Mothers aren't always too caring in tending to their calves, so sometimes you need to help things along a little", said the zoo's director Erich Kocner. The latest addition will probably undergo a special naming ceremony during Košice's 'City Days' in early May. Another female Bactrian camel was born in Košice Zoo last year and is to be brought to the zoo in Bratislava in the next few weeks. Only several hundred Bactrian camels are believed to be still roaming in the wild, with their range having effectively dwindled down to the Gobi desert.
