More than half of food waste is produced by households

Around 53 percent of food waste in Slovakia is produced by households, which means 400 kilograms of such refuse per capita annually, according to the Agriculture Ministry spokesman Vladimir Machalík. Meanwhile, people in the EU produce around 88 million tonnes of food waste annually, representing 173 kilograms per capita. When it comes to Slovakia, fruit and vegetables make up more than 60 percent of food waste from households, while there is also a significant share of finished food, meat products, milk and cereal products. According to the ministry data, as much as 70 percent of food waste end up unused on landfills.
