The prices of goods and services in Slovakia have increased by 17.9% since the country joined the Eurozone in 2009 indicate data from Eurostat. The most significant growth was recorded in 2011 and 2012. On the other hand, between 2014 and 2016, prices declined. According to analyst Eva Sadovská of WOOD & Company, the prices of education have posted the steepest growth since the euro's introduction in Slovakia, while prices of furniture and housing equipment have reported the most significant fall.
In particular, the prices of education grew by 46.8%, alcoholic beverages and tobacco by 41%, prices in the health sector rose by 37.5% and those in restaurants and hotels by 32.6%. Meanwhile, furniture and housing equipment are now 2% cheaper than 11 years ago.
Prices in the sector of transport, postal services and communications are currently 3% higher compared to the period before the country's entry to the Eurozone. Prices in housing grew by 15.3% in 11 years. "Concerning food and non-alcoholic beverages that we buy almost daily, the prices are 20.8% higher than they were shortly before the adoption of the euro," stated Sadovská in her analysis.
