A total of 245 people were killed on Slovak roads last year, which was more than in 2018, but the number of road traffic accidents decreased. "Slovakia is among the countries with the lowest number of fatal road accidents in Europe," said Police Corps President Milan Lucansky, adding that Slovakia has the lowest number of fatal road accidents per capita among the Visegrad Four (V4) countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) and fewer than in Austria. According to the police, almost half of road accidents were caused by careless driving, such as by making a phone call at the wheel. Around 12 percent of road accidents can be put down to speeding, while incorrect driving at junctions was the third most frequent cause. In 2020, the police want to focus on the most serious causes of fatal accidents, as well as critical road sections and drink driving.
