Mochovce secure low carbon footprint for Slovakia

Another potential postponement to the launch of the Mochovce 3 unit of the nuclear power plant in western Slovakia will not endanger Slovakia's energy security or the relative stability of electricity prices, Economy Minister Peter Ziga said for the TASR newswire. Slovakia currently imports just about one-tenth of its consumption and as the minister informed, baseload prices evolve from the development on the European Energy Exchange in Leipzig. Ziga also pointed out that thanks to nuclear energy, Slovakia is one of the countries with the lowest carbon footprint of electricity generation in Europe. "Only 10% of electricity is generated from coal," said the Economy Minister. According to him, this fact makes Slovakia the leader in producing electricity from carbon neutral technologies compared to Poland, the Czech Republic or Germany. The third of the four Mochovce units may be put into operation in the second quarter of 2020, but none of the previously declared deadlines were met.
