The Council of Europe Secretary-General Marija Pejcinovic Buric has appointed Slovak diplomat Drahoslav Stefanek as her new special representative for migration and refugees. The post was created in December 2015 in reaction to the unprecedented flow of migrants and refugees to Europe. The task of the special representative for migration and refugees is to observe how the fundamental rights of migrants and refugees are protected on the ground in the member states and to draw up proposals for action at national and European levels. Stefanek will officially take up his duties on January 15, 2020. Until now, he has served as head of the Council of Europe Office in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to the Council of Europe.
