Plaque honouring 1989 Bratislava-Hainburg march unveiled

Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen was in the Austrian city of Hainburg on Tuesday to unveil a commemorative plaque honouring the 1989 Freedom March from Bratislava to this Austrian town that took place after the fall of the Iron Curtain. More than 100,000 Slovaks marched to Hainburg on December 10, 1989 to meet people from what had been for 40 years the "other world". "The inhabitants of Hainburg greeted the Slovaks with bread and salt, which is an old Slavic welcome greeting ceremony," stated the Austrian president, adding that the march proved the bravery of the Slovak nation.
