In an open letter on Thursday, 28 organisations and 77 civil rights leaders and activists from academia and the human rights field urged MPs to reject the proposed constitutional changes concerning the definition of marriage, TASR learnt on Thursday.
The proposed legislation, according to them, doesn't increase in any way the already existing constitutional protection of marriage, family, parenthood and children. According to their appeal, the only aim of this modification is to prevent same-sex couples from gaining access to the institution of marriage and probably access to any other legal protection of their relationships. “This is a breach of the rights to equality based on minority sexual orientation, in conjunction with the right to human dignity, and further rights, such as the protection of private and family life. The state must have very serious reasons for such a limitation of rights," said Janka Debreceniova from NGO Citizens, Democracy and Accountability. Her arguments were based on the fact that neither the promoters of constitutional change nor anyone else has been able to show any reason for such a change.
