Birth numbers to be replaced by new identifiers

Natural person identifiers should replace the currently used birth numbers. The government at its Wednesday session approved the draft legislation on the identifications. According to the Interior Ministry, birth numbers are no longer sufficient to meet the requirements of today's information systems. The error rate in assigning birth numbers was also high leading to consequent unwanted duplications. Birth numbers were introduced in Slovakia in 1954, which means that there will be a problem in generating new numbers after 2053 without duplications. The ministry also wants to prevent personal data abuse with the new system. Therefore, it wants to introduce a basic unambiguous identifier created in a secret manner that will not be available to users. It will only serve to identify a natural person when exchanging data within different information systems.
